Astor Piazzolla fundamentally revolutionized the tango by merging elements from tango, jazz, classical, rock, and pop music, breaking the rigid concept of pure dance music. Until his death in 1992, he composed approximately 300 tangos, wrote nearly 50 film scores, and released around 40 recordings on vinyl and CD. His ‘Tango nuevo’ ultimately earned him the status of a national hero in Argentina, despite all the resistance he faced.
For this CD production, composer Markus Horn specifically took on the style and development of ‘Tango Nuevo.’ Therefore, this CD features not only Piazzolla’s famous tangos – Le Grand Tango and Fuga y misterio in arrangements for two pianos, as well as his Suite Troileana for piano four hands – but also completely new tangos in the spirit and in homage to the great Argentine composer, which still showcase a completely unique style. The result is a highly varied, colorful piano program, excellently presented with great joy of playing by the ‘Duo Villarceaux.’
