With this recording, Alexandra Sostmann continues her intensive exploration of Bach’s keyboard works. The collection of 24 preludes and fugues, spanning all major and minor keys, represents one of the crowning achievements of Western music and remains a source of inspiration for performers and audiences alike.

In the Echo – Bach and His Resonances
The concert on April 26, marking the conclusion of the Agathenburg Bach Festival, is dedicated to a musical dialogue spanning centuries—centered on the preludes and fugues from the second volume of Johann Sebastian Bach’s *The Well-Tempered Clavier*. This work ranks among the most significant in music history and continues to fascinate to this day with its clarity, depth, and compositional mastery. In his cosmos of polyphonic voices, Bach emerges as the architect of a musical order whose influence extends far beyond his own time.
At the heart of the program lies the concept of the “echo”: Bach as the source of a way of thinking that was taken up, further developed, and transformed by later composers—not as mere imitation, but as a living continuation in sound, color, and expression.
The concert’s structure is deliberately designed as a juxtaposition. Bach’s preludes and fugues—characterized by internal logic, clarity, and structural rigor—are set against 19th- and 20th-century preludes. These appear as snapshots, as sonic states of great expressiveness and intensity.
In Frédéric Chopin’s music, the polyphonic idea is transformed into an intimate, concentrated form. His Préludes open up dense emotional spaces where structural clarity and emotional depth converge within the most confined of spaces.
Alexander Scriabin increasingly breaks down the architectural structure. Voices begin to float, and the harmony becomes more permeable. Yet the echo of Bach remains, preserved in the sound as a delicate web of inner connections.
In Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Préludes, the musical space expands. Polyphonic lines coalesce into multi-layered soundscapes, emerging and then fading away—like voices within a vast, living organism.
Dmitri Shostakovich makes a particularly deliberate reference to Bach in his cycle, Op. 87. Here, the principle of the prelude and fugue is translated into a modern musical language, often imbued with existential themes. Polyphony becomes an expression of inner tension—between clarity and rupture.
The result is a program that presents Bach not merely as a historical point of departure, but as a living idea: as a musical philosophy in which structure and expression are inseparably linked—and whose echo lives on to this day in the soundscapes of later composers.
