BACH & CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

In this personal musical selection, the pianist Alexandra Sostmann traces the delicate ramifications in the history of piano music. Despite the historical distance between the separate works, the choice makes clear that music and interpretation are dependent upon one another and that, together, they can reveal similarities between baroque and contemporary music.

Magnificent Baroque as well as “new” Piano Music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt, Xiaoyong Chen (Premiere Recording), Terry Riley (Transcription for Piano — Premiere Recording), Henri Dutilleux and Dmitri Shostakovich.

TANGO NUEVO

Piazzolla’s “TANGO NUEVO” brought him displeasure on the part of the conservatives who didn’t know how to react to this “new tango” as it deviated from traditional forms, could no longer be danced to and had to be listened to in a concentrated manner. The final breakthrough in Argentina didn’t occur until 1969 after Piazzolla composed a number of successful tangos to be sung. Up until his death in 1992 he composed some 300 tangos, wrote almost 50 pieces of film music, and published around 40 records and CDs. Despite all of the resistance he witnessed, in the end his “Tango Nuevo” accorded him the status as a national hero in Argentina.

The composer Markus Horn adopted the style and further development of “Tango Nuevo” for this CD recording with the DUO VILLARCEAUX. So you will not only hear the famous Piazzolla tangos on this CD – Le Grand Tango and Fuga y mysterio in the version for two pianos and Suite Troileana piano piece for four hands – you will also hear entirely new “Tango nuevos” in the spirit of and out of deference towards the great Argentinian composer. This led to a highly varied and coloured piano programme promising virtuoso and evocative South-American flair from the two young pianists.
